The Herdship Farm walk
takes you through some of the most beautiful countryside that England
has to offer.
Starting at Herdship Farm, a typical Hill Farmers home and the base for
this project; built in the 18 Century, the farm now has 440 breeding sheep
grazing on 570 acres of the upper dales.
The collapse of the mining
industry in the 19th Century forced many families to leave
the area and throughout the walk you will see reminders of these bygone
days.
The mine is closed but remains as a ghost of the past, as does West Frog
Hall to the left of the main holiday cottage and Dale Head well into the
walk.
Look out for the ruined
gables of Harwood Beck Chapel to the South East when you get to the top
of the Moorland. Founded in 1724 for the local farmers and miners when
a small school was added. The incumbent of the chapel had to do both jobs
for £9.00 a year.
As well as the ruins and
mine, look out for some rare meadow flowers like the Harebell, Rock rose
and Globeflower; or at this altitude, the ever elusive Blue Gentian,
which is only found in this area.
You may see rabbits, weasels, voles, mice and many other small country rodents.
On occasion people have reported seeing weasels hunting and chasing prey,
regardless of your closeness.
We have a fantastic line up of birds including Hen Harriers, Falcons and
during the summer you may see the famous Golden Eagles gliding over from
Helvelyn.
Look out for Curlew, Heron, Oyster Catchers, Snipe, Grouse, Lapwing and
Yellow Wagtail.
(During
the summer months you will also see very low flying Harriers, Hawks, Eagles,
Tornado's and Hercules...
..compliments of the RAF and USAF.)
Please
enjoy your walk, feel the openness; fresh air and tranquility that the
Upper Dales offer; but at all times remember you are on our Farm with
wild animals and rare flora.
Please observe the Country Code at all times.
