Chris Beardshaw, the BBC's Flying Gardener visited Herdship
Farm on the 5th July 2002 to take to the skies for a bird's-eye
perspective of the dramatic landscapes and flowering meadows
over Teesdale.
The Upper Dales of Teesdale create an important habitat
for internationally important breeding birds such as the Curlew,
Redshank, Yellow Wagtail, Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Snipe and
Black grouse.
Its variety of rocks and soils, plus high rainfall and altitude,
make this area unique for it's expanse of special flora which
include The Blue Gentian, (Gentiana verna) often referred
to as The Teesdale Gentian; The Harebell (Campanula rotundifolia)
and the beautiful Globeflower (Trollius europaeus).
To maintain this balance farmers of the upper Dales reduce the
use of chemicals, restore the wildlife habitats and safeguard
the traditional architecture of the Dale.
We are very fortunate to live in such an environmentally rich
area and hope the programme lets you experience a small part
of England you may never have known existed.
We have learnt that the programme is to be shown on BBC2 on 23rd May 2003.
If you are looking for a holiday this year which gives you the opportunity to view some of Englands finest landscape and nature...you can't miss this programme.
