Both Frog Hall and Herdship House
are on the land of Raby Estates, currently owned by the 11 Lord
Barnard.
All the houses on the estate are painted white. This is because
the Duke of Cleveland became stranded in a storm while out hunting
in Teesdale and, refused shelter at a local farmhouse which
he had mistaken for one of his own properties, he ordered that
from that day on all buildings belonging to the estate were
to be painted white.
Herdship Farm is 570 acres in size and supports 12 beef cattle
and 500 Swaledale and North Country Cheviot sheep. Visitors
to Frog Hall are very welcome to watch farm the daily farm activities.
In season you can purchase fresh lamb direct from the farm. The
farm lies within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty and the surrounding countryside is spectacular. You have
access to our well-signposted farm walk where you will see an
array of wildlife and the remains of the Lady’s Rake lead
mine.
Whilst a mile from the nearest main county lane, a private tarmac
road leads to the Holiday Cottage where parking for 3 cars is
provided.
