Herdship Farm has been awarded the David Arnold-Forster Trust
Hill Farming Award at an award ceremony in the Malham Tarn Field
Centre in the Yorkshire Dales. Kath and Maurice were presented
with the Hill Farming Award trophy, a certificate and a cheque
from English Nature.
The farm creates an important habitat for internationally
important breeding birds such as the Curlew, Redshank, Yellow
Wagtail, Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Snipe and Black grouse.
The judges recognised the farms ability to promote agriculture
for the public benefit and to manage the farm for wildlife,
the environment as well as business. The rare Teesdale gentian
found in flower meadows on the farm are protected as a Site
of Special Scientific Interest by English Nature.
Herdship Farm has been selected as one of six finalists for
the 2003 Silver Lapwing Award.
The Silver Lapwing Award is given to the commercial farmer
who has done the most to improve the countryside and encourage
wildlife. The three prize-winning farms will be announced
in August and the outright winner will be revealed on November
25.
